Success with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System)

On July 5, 2005, John declared his independence from a corporate life in banking by purchasing a small environmental lab focused on drinking water testing. Seeing a path to growth, he needed a powerful database to provide consistent, quality data in a report format that made sense to all customers. Fortunately, the prior owner had secured just such a database in Ewarenow’s LIMS.

Many of the clients were repeat customers with specific testing needs so a database that automated the data input and thus the report content in a repeatable way would make for efficient and accurate data management. After all, in addition to the testing service, the lab was in the data management and reporting business. As the years went on, new and more complicated data requirements were the norm. Being able to respond with as little disruption as possible was key.

Ewarenow delivered that with the expediency and affordability that a growing company would need. The LIMS was malleable and many changes and improvements were made over the years with a strong collaboration and mutual respect between the lab’s management and Ewarenow. Having a solutions-based database programmer was a key tool to the lab’s successful growth. A prime example of this was the introduction of Doug’s Quick Query tool. This allowed the business to create electronic data deliverables in any format it needed. And the need skyrocketed in the 20 years that John owned the lab. Everyone was automating and the labs that could respond would be successful.

These tools were key to supporting the lab’s growth, both in volume and in testing capabilities, over those 20 years. What started as a six-employee single location business, grew to sixty employees in 3 states with comprehensive laboratory testing and data reporting capabilities. Sales growth tracked growing 10X+ while maintaining strong profit margins over that period.

“A former boss of mine once told me that every business owner needs a good lawyer, a good accountant and a good banker. In the lab business, I would add a good database programmer to that list, and I was fortunate to have Doug and his team.”
