How One Export Saved a Major Account for P. D. Circuits

When a top customer said it was leaving over late deliveries, David Wolff didn't argue. He pulled the data. What Ewarenow Quick Query - the tool that became EQQ-Triangle - put in his hands at the airport gate settled the question in minutes.

The company

P. D. Circuits, Inc. ("PDC") was a U.S.-based Value-Added Reseller (VAR) of printed circuit boards, co-founded and led by David M. Wolff. PDC's business was matching Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) with well-qualified PCB Fabricators - the job shops that build the one-off, custom circuit boards at the center of every electronics product. To get established, Wolff brought in two veterans of the industry: Gene Weiner, a member of the IPC Hall of Fame, and Keith Robbins, who helped identify, qualify, and pre-sell manufacturers' reps and direct sales staff.

PCB fabrication is unforgiving. Each board is a unique, OEM-owned design; some are extremely complex; and the buying decision is never just about this week's lowest price. Errors, omissions, and late deliveries damage the reputation of everyone in the chain - the Fabricator, the EMS that assembles the finished product, and the OEM that puts its name on it. PDC's whole value proposition rested on getting every link in that chain right, every time - what quality consultant Philip B. Crosby called "doing it right the first time," or DIRTFT.

Key terms
  • PCB (Printed Circuit Board) - the custom electronic board at the center of every order in this case study.
  • EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Service) - the company that assembles PCBs into a finished electronics product.
  • OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) - the company that owns the product design and brings it to market.

In that chain, a VAR like PDC only survives if every party trusts its numbers. Fabricators need confidence that PDC will keep sending them qualified orders; EMS and OEM customers need confidence that PDC's Fabricators will deliver on schedule; and PDC itself needs to be able to prove, on demand, that the system is working as promised. That last piece - proving it on demand - is exactly what was about to be tested.

The problem

One of PDC's largest customers told Wolff it was dropping the account. Their reason: PDC was delivering late "nearly half the time." For a VAR whose entire business is built on trust between Fabricators, EMS partners, and OEMs, that kind of accusation is existential - if the customer's perception was right, PDC had a real quality problem. If it was wrong, PDC was about to lose a major account over a story nobody had checked.

Wolff didn't have time to commission a study. He had a flight to catch, and a customer who wanted an answer now.

What Quick Query did

PDC's order history already lived in the database Ewarenow had built and supported for the business. What it lacked was a fast way for Wolff himself - not a database programmer - to ask that data a direct question: across every order over the last two years, how often did we actually deliver on time? Ewarenow Quick Query, the ancestor of today's EQQ-Triangle, was built for exactly this: a non-technical business owner asking his own database a plain-language question and getting a real answer back, without writing SQL and without waiting on IT.

"Ewarenow Quick Query saved a big account for us… when I left for the airport I had an Excel spreadsheet from Quick Query with the facts: 97% on-time delivery on dozens of orders over a 2-year period. The account stayed with us for many more years."

David Wolff, Former President, P. D. Circuits, Inc.

That single export, generated in the time it took to get to the gate, reframed the entire conversation. Instead of PDC defending a reputation with anecdotes, Wolff walked in with the actual order-level record: dozens of shipments, two years of history, 97% delivered on time. The customer stayed - and, per Wolff, "for many more years" after that.

The broader track record

The account-saving export wasn't a fluke reading of a lucky two-year window. It was consistent with PDC's own decade-long customer-satisfaction results, tracked across its full order book: 98% of orders fully met quality requirements as delivered (over 99% for standard production orders; quick-turn orders ran somewhat lower), and 96% were delivered to the customer's dock on time, with most of the remaining delays limited to just one or two days. Cost, meanwhile, stayed fair to all three parties in the chain - the EMS or OEM customer, the Fabricator, and PDC itself. That combination - consistently high quality, reliable schedule, and fair economics for everyone involved - is exactly the DIRTFT standard the business was built on, and it's what kept PDC's Fabricators and EMS partners able to invest in more and better equipment to keep up with demand.

Wolff worked with Doug MacLean and Ewarenow for 15 years across that period, spanning several of his business ventures. As he put it looking back on the relationship:

"You really were paying attention for those 15 years, Doug!"

Why it still matters today

The specific tool Wolff used has a new name, but the idea behind it hasn't changed. EQQ-Triangle is a read-only, installed, no-SQL query tool: it connects directly to a company's own PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MS SQL database and lets the people who actually run the business - not just the people who can write SQL - ask it direct questions and export the answer to Excel, CSV, JSON, or PDF. For a business like PDC, where the difference between keeping and losing a major account came down to whether the owner could get a straight, defensible answer out of his own order history in the ten minutes before a flight, that's the whole point. The database already knows the answer. EQQ-Triangle just means you don't need a programmer standing by to ask it.

Every distributor, reseller, or job-shop business in electronics manufacturing carries this same exposure: your reputation with Fabricators, EMS partners, and OEMs alike rests entirely on whether your delivery and quality numbers actually hold up when someone asks. Most of that data already sits in an ERP or order-management database somewhere - the gap is almost never the data itself, it's whether the person who needs the answer can get it without filing a request and waiting. That gap is what cost PDC nearly its biggest account, and it's the exact gap EQQ-Triangle is built to close, for PCB distribution and any other business where the next hard conversation with a customer could turn on a number sitting in a database nobody can query fast enough.
